I am about to embark on a religious journey to Makkah and Medina. I have mixed feelings about this trip. I am really excited to visit historical grounds. Like totally, as my valley girl side would say. But, am I religiously up for it? People say its ok...it's these trips that renew yourself. Are you sure? Well, I am not leaving that out of the box. I am taking it all in as this trip, with each friend, I've been told is happy that I am going, is showing its importance every hour.
I'm not hoping. I am believing. High five.
Take off is 4PM Tuesday. Let's go.
P.S. The 5 days in Dubai post Umrah shouldn't be so bad either. =)

Linkin Park Concert update. So Spring break came and went....didn't do much but go watch LINKIN PARK!!!! THEY FRICKIN ROCKED! I've never been to a more awesome rock concert. Spice Girls and NSync were awesome in their own ranks.
So I went with Sophie into the PIT Are and we got right there in the front! I couldn't believe how close we were. But lemme make this a quick summary: Sophie almost fainted cuz it was so hot so the security peeps pulled her out. Hoobastank, Story of the Year, and POD opened...and they all rocked. I had this big fat guy in front of me who was a nice cushion...and that was that! ROCK ON!

Culture Show Recap: I've met some really cool people along the way to my last culture show here at SC.

MORE UCLA DRAMA!!! But this time it's not to do with PSA/MSA
"Over six years, a UCLA medical school official sold 496 cadavers for $704,600, according to invoices that provide the first evidence of the scope of the scandal in the school's body donor program. "
ahhh....ok read on with my monday blog!

A little late on the updating don't you think? Why, yes, I do think so.
So here it is.
I will first start off with the Berkely Bwood competition and the short comparison to the Oscars. So messed up is Berekely that they have never given SC love. NEVER. And finally, 'SC had no choice but to tear the Bollywood competition up again for what my friend rightfully said, "3peat." It was indeed a three-peat becuz since the inception 3 yrs ago we tore it up literally, first with the lovey-dovey them bwood movies are known for, then last year, with the edgier hip hoppy gangsta themes. Thi syea a combo of everything and bag chips they finally won. The funny thing I see is that, the oscars did not recognize Sean Penn for his performance to win Dead Man Walking but finall got him for Mystic River which i don't think was his best work, but he got becuz i think it was his time. I really though Johnny Depp wouldve taken it, but my comparison is that 3rd ones the charm, and although this could be hte best bwood performace, i dont know yet...i need to see the tape...that it was 'SC time, because if they didn't win, there wouldve been an uproar of drama for not letting them win.
Moving on...
Eid Banquet!
This year, all of the 2 semesters of hard work and labor we put in, came down to Feb. 21, 2004. Crazy ish and it was raining! So cool was planning this banquet, i felt a great accomplishment that we also had a rain plan, security plan, before and after dinner plan...oh wow...was that a cool feeling. Just plain cool. With the rain, there were issues of course, but all in all the most well-organized banquet during my tenure for the psa/psx years.
Listening to all the concerns(the hypocrits aside--thats later on) from the past years we made a really good one this year....food was better than last year, the elegance was hitched up a notch....thanks to the remodelling of the ceiling and chandeliers. Consul General of Pakistan in Los Angeles was part of hte revamped welcoming segment. He was tight. I can't believe he actually went to the psX website to find out what the X stood for. I loved it! Imam Sadullah then spoke of the importance of celebrations. He was tight too....more from him later. Then we broke out into dinner and song...Mr. profound Ilyas Shaikh emcee'd the welcoming segment.
Dinner was much improved, but it was supposed to be chicken tikka...but tasted more like chicken salan. Ya....i really loved the salad...it was hella good.
Then my moment came. The lights went low...well they didn't, but imagine they did. Conquest was played, USC student raised their victory signs up, and the entertainment began. To make a long blog short, i did my thang....and we move on to the drama....
Hypocrisy:
Why is it,i laugh evertime i talk about this, that UCLA (no offense to my good UCLA friends) has to cause issues with Eid Banquet? I mean, I know there is the whole rivalry thing, but still...this is psX love. I can only speculate it because of the banquets massive success over the years, unlike their massive retreat of their culture show. I need to get that out there. Maybe that is what my motivation was. Watching UCLA cause drama with us, had motivated me to make sure eid banquet never failed during my tenure here. So, 3 yrs straight UCLA gave me that motivation and also helped me create(with my team) and increasingly popular banquet that turns out better and better every year.
Now the hypocrisy comes in all facets of UCLA life:
First Eid Banquet: I would like to say I am very good in making sure peoples concerns are heard and giving them reasons we accept their concerna dn try to compromise and help them out or why the concern or suggestion doesn't work. Without the other psa's....we don't have a banquet...cuz its for everyone....
anyway....
1 month planning of this banquet....UCI CSUF UCR, all the schools busted out giving suggestions...concerns...stuff like that...cool. WE addressed them the issues and made sure everyone was comfy. I made sure in my email that they get their concerns in soon before things get solidified. Naturally, 3 days before banquet, things are supposed to be solidified....like ticket prices, advertising, program...cuz you know...its 3 days before banquet! Otherwise you got mass havok cuz you aint got nothing planned.........so ya........3 days before... ahh i love this part.... UCLA (no names mentioned) decides to email me stating 3 things:
1. Make the banquet free
2. Invite MSA's/MSU's
3. No dancing
My explanation: 1. You crazy?! Making is free? Have you ever run a banquet? I mean, I hadn't, so if you got some experience on running it OFF CAMPUS WITH NO MONEY, how do you wanna make it free? Is there magical way. Sure we got sponsorship...but if the hall is charging 15 dollars a head for food...sponsorship only covers a certain amount of food. And you are telling me the charge of $5-$10 a head is too much for you? Man...
2. You crazy??? Do you not know the history of in-fighting with MSA's and MSU's vs. PSA's? HAH you kidding me? Hypocrisy lies within all the clubs...with me running this first banquet, no way was MSA or MSU getting involved. This was a PSA event...not MSA or MSU. If they want to come, there are more than welcomed to come, but as far going out of our way to invite...no...it's okay...
worked out better anyway....
3. You crazy?? First things first...this banquet was made for the people of all naseeb.com levels...from liberal to progressives to traditionals. The dancing was there, but it was not advertised...because if people wanted to dance they could..if not...they could simply....leave. Simple as that. The main program was over...i mean...shoot beats any other banquet or party where there is alky. This provided a safe clean environment...
-----------
Year 2.
This time it was the MSA at UCLA. Gotta love them...ahhhhh....
When all this talk of unity and crap is being preached by MSA's to PSA's they like to shift things themselves. Sohaib Webb, a popular speaker for the youngsters was coming to MSA UCLA college day first...and we thought, hey, we have banquet that day...why don't SHARE the religious speaker for our second banquet cuz now we were adding a religous speaker aspect to our program for the USC non-muslim kids.
We asked him...told him he would speak at 730 and one of our boyz from ucla at the banquet would drive him to make his speech at UCLA at 830. MSA UCLA agreed, but not until 3 days before....i love it how they work! 3 days before MSA UCLA decides it is threatening their college day and can't risk sohaib webb going to the banquet first for he might not make it to UCLA in time. Then UCLA pulls the, you didnt even book Sohaib Webb, sooooo YOU CANT HAVE HIM trick....and this is the unifying MSA at UCLA we are talking about....i mean....wow....that is pretty amazing. Let's play nice kiddies...
Year 3.
Ahhh the hypocrisy goes on...
so now...PSA UCLA likes more issues. This time...arr I can't say..it might start in-fighting between sects of the muslim world. Oh wait...it's been like that since it the sects separated...nothing new...
The only thing new about this was that, I never thought about the division of sects. All i ever thought about the best possible date for banquet and non-conflicting time frame. Being on teh first day of Muharram, the Islamic New year presented a whole new ball game.
Not thinking that the first as an issue...
ok so planning has been going on for 2 semesters....dates had been chosen...with all things considered...Feb. 21 was the best possible date. About 1 month before, my Shia friend had told me that Muharram starts on the 21 of Feb and its big for shia's and so we'd lose the Shia population because of that. I was like...cricky....and explained to him what the possibilties and issues there were with dates....Bhangra Berkely, next week bad..march too late...long weekend..people go home...21 the best date...and he understood and was just disappointed but was not going to show. I felt bad that it happened this way...but we there was no other date. However, it was the only date available.
Realizing that we would lose a portion of the audience, I really didn't think there would be any problems...basically...if people can't show....they just don't show...simple as that. Instead...people like drama...oh well....what can ya do.
1 and half weeks before banquet UCLA has some issues I can't really explain at this moment...though it sorta leads to the day before...where psx and I receive an email about the concerned4psa emails regarding eid banquet and the religious problem with muharram and then dacning and then all that....likei haven't dealt with before. I read through it and laugh. I was like....wow these people are plain dumb...and UCLA is a smart school too, but why so dumb. Out of 1 month and half knowing about the date of the banquet...these kats finally decided 1-2 weeks before banquet to become ultra-religious? you gotta be kidding me...if they were following their sect or religion closely they wouldve known the moment they heard about banquet that it was on the 21/1st of muharram, and they have the guall to be religious to me?
You gotta be kidding me. No way. What got to me...amusing...is that, since they couldnt get their way in getting refunds...(cuz we already got thier checks and cashed em, then we suggested to exchange with other students that wanted to go) WHICH THEY DID, they wanted to "eradicate" the religious portion cuz it was going agianst Islam! I busted out laughing....there is so much ish i can talk about this....oh man...talk about unity from UCLA! FIght on! wtf are talking out of? your ass? Clearly you don't realize that banquet revolves around our X, religious, social, cultural, and political. Eid Banquet, represents all that is....the religous segment is not a religious segment that they thought it was...because they don't ask us if it and want infromation they go ahead and make assumptions. The first segment has been the last two years a welcome segment, with a religious speaker, imam sadullah khan, to talk about Eid and what it is about specifically. Because we actually have a full house and because we have non-muslims coming...can you believe it...over 100 non-muslims coming to a eid banquet and learning what eid is about! How awesome is that? They want to stop that because that is going against Islam? Wow...maybe they take a lesson or two in Islam and stop doing the hypocritical things they do...i cannot mention here...
But ya...i wasn't really affected by the emails until i personally had my email given out by them. That is when i got furious. No way in hell that was cool at all...especially one email addressed to me saying "i will do anything to stop this program." I was like wtf??? wierdness...
Can you just please not come...i mean...damn homie...i respect your sect..its your thang..if you wanna come, come...if you dont...dont....i mean simple...damn sending me threatening emails...wont cut it.....
We obvisouly didnt change anything for the banquet...and funny part of it was that the co-author of that email, HE WAS AT BANQUET! HAH I laughing my ass off....i mean the guy tells people not to go and actually succeeds in getting some of them not go....and he himself...GOES! Hypocrisy lives on!
I love Imam Sadullah Khan...that guy is so tight. Like he knows we have dancing in the end, but realizes what its about...and he just does a wonderful job..i cant thank him enough. He doesnt preach Islam the way we think would be scary to everyone. He knows non-muslims are there and he tailors his speech so well that they learn that Islam non-threatening, we have celebrations etc. I mean woohoo...the last two years is what we've wanted him to do...so many SC students loved banquet and they know what eid is about...the hajj and ramadan...and all that....and like wow...its amazing...thats how i envisioned banquet and how i would reach out to the 'SC community. Of course with the much needed help of our 4 person team.
This year, Sadullah talk about the whole muharram issue...and how it was a moment of commemoration etc...and im so happy he brought up the issue, because there were shias in teh audience including homeboy hypocrit and he sort of put the fire out.
It was another funny moment that Imam Sadullah was mad that these students didn't come to him about it. I mean he is the religious coordinator of Islam at UCLA!!!!! And if there were any issues he wouldve come t us. I would have listened to an Imam, rather than a student quoting a hadith (sayings of the prophet)...i mean come on now...now way would i quote a hadith in my argument cuz i aint a scholar...neither was the hypocrit emailers....pleaseeee...
ok im blogging on that makes no sense at all....
in the end...the banquet was tight...did the usual crazy ish...
ANYWAY.... UCLA, I LOVE YOU....for all the memories we've shared with Eid Banquet...and all the hypocrisy....Fight on!
So here it is.

WOW! Sunday January 4th was a frickin blast!
So here's the story. Saturday I was originally supposed to go boating with my brother and his friends, but he said you know what, bring your friends tomorrow (sunday). I called some people up and they were down to go. Great. I wasn't really expecting much of the boat trip. The last time I went on a boat was the "Catalina Express" for senior ditch day in high school. Plus my aunt told me the boat looked like the fishing boat in Finding Nemo, small and dinky.
However, my friend Afsha was all stoked to go...which in turn made me somewhat happy to go, cuz at least someone was happy to go boating...
BTW, Saturday's weather was helllllla windy. Yes, I said hella and ain't from up north.=P
So we head out to Newport Beach, Cali. Awesome day, the day before was hellllllla windy, and it turns out...our day was...perrrrrrfect. Slight breeze and everything perfect.
About 8 friends of mine came along...ahhh....we got the boat ready, got ice, water, raised the protective plastic windows and we were on our way. AYE MATEY!
Out of Newport Beach Harbor we travelled. Deephu acted gay of course...jusss kidding, but he was drinking lots of cock....i mean coke....
Right when we got out of the harbor, my bro told us to hold on to something and we are off! blasting through waters for 20 seconds..then he calmed down...in between all this on our way to Dana Point we were living it up...eating chips and blasting the muzak while taking in the breathtaking view. My friends' gf sister even got to drive the boat for a little bit.
I got my chance in the middle to man the ship. ARRRR being the first mate and all. I took us through the dangerous waters of seaweed and to Dana Point Harbor. What a trip. I truly felt like Gilligan...woohooo gee skipper what next!
So we pulled in the port thinking we might find a nice picnic area so we could eat. Nothing. So we decided to take the boat back out and anchor it near the beach and eat our lunch. We did so...and I actually got to lower an ANCHOR in the ocean! How phat is that?! It went farrrr too!
The hard part was when we finished and we were trying to pull it up. Bakshi and I had to coordinate our timings to pull the anchor up together. Heave ho heave ho...and we did it....now we gotta put it away....
As we were putting it away...danger struck us....(enter danger music) the boat was moving towards the beach....immediately the first mate (that's me) shouted to the capn. to reverse at full speeed!!!!! err...ok so I just raised my voice a little and mentioned to my bro we should back up a little....geeez...sue me...
After backing up we turned to head back to Newport Beach. In the process Bakshi, Deephu, I were trying to figure out how to make the anchor fit back in its place. For 10 minutes while the boat is rockin up and down at 20 knots im at the edge scared of falling off...it was AWESOME! Finally we did it! Good team effort...i got some battle scares to prove it...
After that the three of us strapped ourselves to the front of the boat and we raced back to Newport while admiring the sunset. What a gorgeous evening! As we were holding on for dear life the waves hit the boat in the fron and we all got soaked! KILLER! We finally hit the harbor and we slowed to cruising and it was awesome again...all the lights from the boats and the moonlight was ....just.....wow....won't forget it for sure. After that we all went home and just dreamt of the day that just happened..... ahhhh sigh.....
